Return the Gift

Dado Villa-Lobos was the former guitar player in legendary Brazilian post-punk band Legiao Urbana (formed in 1982, broke up in1996) and is now a successful solo artist. Dado invited Andy to join him for a live show in Brazil in 2011, the start of their friendship.

“RETURNING THE GIFT!

It was in January of 1983 in Brasilia, the 23-year-old new capital of Brasil, 800 miles from Rio de Janeiro, the Sambafunk town. My mates in my new band (Legião Urbana) told me to make some Andy Gill-like guitar noises on our first single called ‘Ainda é Cedo’. After it was released people used to say that it sounded like The Edge from U2 but I always said No! It’s all about Andy and Gang of Four! What followed was the history of a Brazilian Rock mythological band….Legião Urbana.

In 2011 I met Andy (the real myth!) who accepted our invitation to feature in an MTV live show in São Paulo. We played ‘Ainda é cedo’ and ‘Damaged Goods’, it was just great, his presence, performance and his kindness and so now I miss him a lot and for ever!
The recording of ‘Return the Gift’ was so far the greatest moment in these pandemic times, a great, honourable pleasure and leisure for sure, with the expectation to have returned all I’ve got from this Gang.” – Dado Villa-Lobos
