John Sterry joined Gang of Four as lead vocalist in 2013. Since then he has performed live with Gang of Four more than 100 times all over the world and contributed to the song writing on the Gang of Four albums “What Happens Next” (2015) and “Happy Now” (2019), as well as numerous EPs.
John is one half of electro punk duo FUKC and debuted as solo artist JJ Sterry in 2020, with his first single “Day Turns to Night”, written after Andy Gill died and which featured on last year’s Gang of Four EP “ANTIHERO”. As JJ Sterry he will release his debut EP in 2021.
“We played 5:45 almost every night on the final Gang of Four tour, back in 2019- so when I was asked to contribute a song, this seemed like the natural choice. It fit with the times: we’ve all watched too much TV recently – and that kitchen sink mundanity of the characters in the song, having horrific events beamed in to their living rooms, meant it could have been written yesterday. But Gang of Four have always had a knack for being timeless, for being both specific and general too…
The other artists on the record show how far reaching Andy and the band’s influence has been – inspiring through both time and space – and there’s covers in there from almost every album in the last 40 years; it really shows that Andy was innovating right to the end. I’m proud to be a part of the band’s story over the past 8 years or so and proud honour Andy and the band by being a part of this incredible record.” – John Sterry
