Not Great Men

Andy’s guitar technique was a huge influence on Julie Campbell (LoneLady) when she first started to play music. Julie supported Gang of Four in London in February 2015.

“I first became aware of Gang of Four via REM, who I loved, and who cited Gang of Four as an influence …So I duly purchased Entertainment! and was immediately blown away by Andy Gill’s sharp, choppy rhythms that ripped out of the speakers and ricocheted off the walls of my flat. Andy deconstructed what the guitar could do and created a thrilling new language. His unique style has had a huge influence my own guitar playing.

It was a real honour to support Gang of Four live and meet Andy; he darted over to me, shook my hand enthusiastically and said ‘I love your stuff!’ That’s my line I thought.

I love all of Gang of Four’s albums and EPs, but Entertainment! perfectly distils their economic, funk-influenced, incendiary sound. I could have chosen any song, but ‘Not Great Men’ has a lean, staccato feel to it I felt I could do some justice to. Gang of Four and Andy’s importance in the cultural canon are obvious and will last forever.” – Julie Campbell, LoneLady
